Quick answer: MDF is a good material for painted interior wall panelling because it is smooth, consistent and easy to cut into strips. Plan the layout first, have the strips cut accurately, mark level lines on the wall, fix with a suitable grab adhesive and optional pins, then fill, caulk, prime and paint.
Choose standard or moisture resistant MDF
Use standard MDF for normal dry interior rooms. For kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and other humid interiors, use moisture resistant MDF.
Plan the panel layout before cutting
Measure the wall and decide the finished height, strip width and number of panels before ordering. Mark the design on the wall with a pencil and spirit level so you can check the proportions before fixing anything permanently.
Equal spacing is more important visually than forcing a particular gap size. Work from the total usable wall width, subtract the width occupied by the MDF strips, then divide the remaining width evenly between the gaps.
Cut the MDF into consistent strips

Mark level and plumb lines before fixing
Do not rely on the floor, skirting or ceiling being perfectly level. Set the main lines with a spirit or laser level and keep checking the layout as you work across the wall.
Fix MDF panelling with grab adhesive
For a sound interior wall, a suitable grab adhesive is a straightforward fixing method. Panel pins or brads can be used where useful to hold pieces while the adhesive cures. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for the wall surface and curing time.
Fill rigid defects and caulk the perimeter
Fill pin holes and rigid joints, then use decorators' caulk where the MDF meets the wall or other finished surfaces. Let the filler and caulk cure before sanding and decorating.
Prime cut MDF edges before painting
