Quick answer: standard MDF is not waterproof. Moisture-resistant MDF, often called MR MDF or green MDF, is designed to cope better with humid interior conditions, but it should still be properly finished for the job.
Use standard MDF in normal dry interiors
Standard MDF sheets are a good choice for furniture, shelving, cabinetry, wall panelling and general joinery in dry interior rooms. The smooth face machines and paints well, which is why MDF is widely used for painted interior work.
Use MR MDF for humid interior rooms
For kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and other humid interiors, choose Moisture Resistant MDF Sheets. MR MDF uses a board specification designed to give improved moisture resistance while keeping the smooth finish and machining characteristics of MDF.
Green MDF does not mean waterproof MDF
The green colour commonly associated with MR MDF helps identify the moisture-resistant grade. The colour itself does not make the board waterproof. The finished performance still depends on the grade, the installation and how exposed faces, cut edges and penetrations are finished.
Prime and paint freshly cut MDF edges
Cut edges are more absorbent than the factory face. Sand them smooth, apply a suitable MDF primer and finish them as part of the complete painted surface. See How to Paint MDF Edges Smoothly.
Can MDF be used outside?
The Standard MDF and MR MDF in our current range are sold for interior projects. Do not treat MR MDF as an exterior-grade board simply because it has improved moisture resistance. If the job requires MDF outdoors, use a board specifically rated for that exterior application and follow its finishing specification.
Can MDF be used in a bathroom?
For bathroom furniture, panelling and other humid interior joinery, start with MR MDF rather than standard MDF and finish the board properly. Where a construction is designed for regular direct water exposure, use the material and complete system specified for that wet application.
Standard MDF or MR MDF?
