Measure the finished horizontal slat run. The calculator divides it into equal bays no wider than 1.8m, with every slat joint positioned over a post.
Posts and support
Posts are estimated at no more than 1.8m centres. A vertical 25 × 50mm support is added inside each bay so horizontal slats have fixing points no more than approximately 900mm apart. Post length allows approximately 600mm below ground.
This is a material estimate for a straightforward freestanding garden screen. Tall, exposed, coastal or unusually loaded fences may require larger posts, closer spacing, deeper foundations or project-specific advice.
Optional materials
Build in bays
Set the posts first, then cut each horizontal slat to its bay. This keeps every end and joint supported rather than leaving joints floating between posts.
Use a spacing block
Cut one spacer to the selected gap and reuse it as each row is fixed. Check level regularly rather than relying on the spacer alone.
Allow timber to move
Use treated exterior timber, suitable coated fixings and re-treat cut ends. Natural timber may move as it dries, so consistent support and fixing are important.
