Choose the door lining from the finished wall depth

The lining should finish close to the face of the completed wall so the architrave can sit neatly across the joint. Measure the wall after allowing for plasterboard, plaster or skim, then choose the closest finished lining depth.

Standard softwood door linings are available in five depths

Our Softwood Door Lining Kit covers approximately 108mm, 120mm, 132mm, 145mm and 155mm finished wall depths. Each set includes two uprights, a reversible head for 2'6" or 2'9" doors and loose door stops.

Firecheck door linings are available in 108mm, 132mm and 145mm finished depths

Our Redwood Fire Door Lining Set uses a heavier 38mm nominal section and includes a 15 × 4mm groove for a compatible intumescent strip or smoke seal. The three sizes finish at approximately 32 × 108mm, 32 × 132mm and 32 × 145mm.

Door lining, door frame and door casing are closely related terms

A door lining forms the timber frame around an internal door and normally uses separate loose door stops. A door casing generally has the stop formed or rebated into the frame. If the terminology is getting in the way of choosing, read Door Lining vs Door Frame vs Door Casing.

If your wall falls between two lining sizes, go slightly larger

A lining that is a couple of millimetres narrow can often be dealt with during finishing. For a larger mismatch, choosing the next depth up and planing it down normally gives the cleaner result. Our Door Lining Sizes guide covers all stocked sizes.

Fit the lining square and plumb before hanging the door

Pack the lining inside the opening, fix through the packed points and keep checking the legs, head and diagonals as you work. The door lining fitting guide covers the sequence.

Finish the opening with architrave

Once the door is hung and the stops are fitted, architrave covers the joint between the lining and finished wall. Building a new partition at the same time? See our Build a Stud Wall range.
