Choose a joist hanger by three things: what it fixes to, the actual width of the timber, and the type of connection. Do not choose one only because the timber is described as 4x2, 6x2 or another trade size.

Timber-to-timber and masonry hangers are different products

The joist hangers Wern-Wood currently sells are primarily timber-to-timber hangers. A masonry hanger is designed to be built into or fixed to masonry using its own installation detail. Do not substitute one type for the other.

Match the hanger width to the actual timber width

38mm hangers suit correctly sized 38mm CLS. A 47mm hanger suits a 47mm timber member. A 50mm hanger is for an actual 50mm member. Imperial names such as 4x2 and 6x2 do not guarantee the finished width.

Mini hangers are for compact and shallow connections

Mini or no-leg hangers have short side flanges. They are commonly used for shallow trimming, loft openings and decking. Our mini range is for timber up to 100mm deep.

Standard Jiffy hangers suit deeper timber joists

Standard timber-to-timber hangers have long strap legs and are commonly called Jiffy hangers. The standard range is used for deeper joists, typically around 150–250mm, and can be face-fixed or wrapped over where the product instructions allow.

A double hanger is selected by the actual wider member

A 100mm double joist hanger is for a connection designed around a 100mm hanger width. Do not assume that any two joists automatically require the same double hanger.

Angled and sloping joists need a hanger designed for the angle

Do not bend a standard hanger to create a 45° or sloping connection unless that exact product is designed to be adjusted. Dedicated skewed and slope-adjustable hangers exist for those details.

Use the connector manufacturer's fixing schedule

Our current standard and mini timber-to-timber hangers use 30 × 3.75mm square twist nails. Other connector systems can specify approved connector screws or different nails. Read Joist Hanger Nails or Screws? before substituting fixings.
