The fitting method depends on the gravel board and the fence post. Timber gravel boards can be fixed to timber posts with suitable galvanised gravel-board clips, brackets or treated timber cleats. Concrete gravel boards normally slot into compatible slotted concrete posts. Some purpose-made brackets can support concrete boards on timber posts, but the fixing must be designed for the board being used.
Fit timber gravel boards to timber posts with clips or cleats
Set the gravel board at the required height and make sure it is level. Fix a suitable galvanised gravel-board clip or bracket to each timber post with exterior-grade screws or galvanised nails, then lower or position the board into the fixing. If the clip has side fixing holes, secure the board through them as intended.
A treated timber cleat can also be fixed to the post and the gravel board screwed to the cleat. Keep the board aligned with the fence face rather than letting it twist between the posts.
Timber gravel boards can also work with compatible concrete posts
If the timber board fits the post slots correctly, it can be lowered between compatible slotted concrete posts. Measure the slot and board thickness first rather than assuming every combination fits.
Concrete gravel boards slot into slotted concrete posts
Our 1830 × 300mm Concrete Gravel Board is designed for compatible slotted concrete posts. For a new panel fence, the sequence is post → gravel board → fence panel. Once the posts are secure and sufficiently set, lower the gravel board evenly into the slots, check it is level, then fit the panel above.
Concrete boards are heavy, so treat lifting and positioning as a two-person job.
Using concrete gravel boards with timber posts needs the right bracket
Purpose-made brackets exist for some concrete-board and timber-post combinations, but they are not the same as ordinary fence-panel clips. Wern-Wood's current concrete board is sold for the slotted concrete-post system, so that remains our standard installation method.
