Quick answer: a straightforward internal timber stud wall starts with a head plate and sole plate, vertical CLS studs set out to suit the plasterboard or chosen wall system, any required noggins and opening framing, then insulation and plasterboard where the design calls for them. The useful starting point is the finished wall, not a generic timber quantity.

This guide is for a simple non-loadbearing internal partition. If the wall has structural, fire, acoustic or other specified performance requirements, follow the relevant drawing or tested manufacturer system rather than treating a general DIY method as the specification.

What do you need to build a timber stud wall?

For a typical internal partition, the main materials are:

  • CLS timber for the head plate, sole plate and vertical studs
  • Plasterboard suitable for the room and required wall build-up
  • Drywall screws matched to the board and framing
  • Suitable fixings for attaching the timber frame to the surrounding structure
  • Insulation where the chosen wall design calls for it
  • A door lining if the partition includes an internal doorway

1. Plan the finished wall before choosing the CLS

Do not choose the timber section in isolation. Work out what the finished wall needs to accommodate: plasterboard thickness, services, any insulation, door openings and any specified fire or acoustic build-up.

Our current CLS range finishes at 38 × 63mm, 38 × 89mm and 38 × 140mm, commonly called 3x2, 4x2 and 6x2. Use those finished dimensions when checking wall depth. If those names are unfamiliar, read What Is CLS Timber?.

2. Mark the wall position and check what you are fixing into

Mark the proposed wall line on the floor, then transfer it accurately to the ceiling and adjoining walls. Check for cables, pipes and other services before drilling or fixing.

The fixing method must suit what you are fixing into. Timber, masonry and concrete do not all use the same fixings.

3. Fit the sole plate and head plate

The sole plate forms the bottom of the frame and the head plate forms the top. Fix them on the marked lines and keep them aligned so the finished stud faces remain in one plane.

4. Set out the stud centres from the board or wall system

There is no single spacing that applies to every stud wall. 400mm and 600mm centres are both used in UK work, but the correct layout depends on the board size and orientation, wall height and any tested or specified wall system.

Mark the stud positions on both plates before cutting or fixing the vertical studs. Plan where plasterboard edges and openings will land rather than discovering the problem after the frame is built.

5. Cut and fit the vertical studs

Measure the actual distance between the plates and cut the studs to suit. Keep them plumb and keep their faces in the same plane so the wall lining has a consistent fixing surface.

If the project follows a structural drawing or tested system, use the timber section, centres and fixing arrangement given in that specification.

6. Plan door and other openings before boarding

A doorway, window or other opening interrupts the repeated stud layout and changes the timber take-off. Plan those openings while the frame is exposed.

7. Add noggins and support where the wall needs them

Noggins can provide intermediate support, help around openings and provide fixing points for items that will later be attached to the wall. Their number and position depend on the wall and lining rather than a single rule that applies to every partition.

If cabinets, sanitaryware, handrails or other significant items will be fixed to the finished wall, plan the required support before the plasterboard hides the frame.

8. Plan services and insulation before closing the wall

Run the required services while both sides of the frame are accessible. If insulation is being added, choose it for the reason the wall needs it rather than simply filling the cavity with whatever product fits.

9. Fit the plasterboard to the chosen system

Fit the chosen plasterboard so board edges and intermediate fixings are properly supported. Screw length, fixing centres, joint arrangement and number of board layers depend on the plasterboard and wall system.

Specialist moisture-resistant, acoustic or fire-resistant boards are components of a wall system. A specialist board on its own does not automatically make the complete wall moisture-proof, soundproof or fire-rated.

10. Check the frame before the second side is closed

Before boarding the final side, check that:

  • The wall is straight and the studs are plumb
  • The stud faces are in one plane
  • Door and other openings are correctly positioned
  • Required support for future wall fixings is installed
  • Services are complete and protected as required
  • Insulation is correctly fitted where specified
  • The board layout lands on the intended supports

It is much easier to correct a framing problem while the timber is still visible than after both sides have been boarded and finished.

Why we do not provide a stud wall calculator

You may have searched for a stud wall calculator expecting to enter the wall length and get a timber quantity. We deliberately do not provide one, because wall length alone is not enough information to give a take-off we would be confident you should order from.

Two walls that are both 2m long can require different quantities because of:

  • Doorways, windows or other openings
  • Corners, returns and junctions
  • Wall height
  • 400mm, 600mm or another specified stud layout
  • Single or double head/sole details
  • Noggins and support for future wall fixings
  • The plasterboard size and board layout
  • Acoustic, fire, thermal or structural requirements

A calculator with only two or three inputs can return a very precise-looking number while making assumptions you cannot see. The more detailed the wall becomes, the more information the calculator would need before that precision meant anything.

Common stud-wall mistakes to avoid

  • Planning from 3x2 or 4x2 instead of the finished dimensions: use the actual CLS section when wall depth matters.
  • Choosing stud centres before choosing the board/system: the lining and required performance should inform the frame layout.
  • Forgetting the finished wall depth around a doorway: boards and finishes affect the door-lining depth.
  • Closing the wall before planning services or heavy fixings: add the required support while the frame is open.
  • Treating a generic partition as a structural specification: loadbearing and performance-led walls need the correct design or tested system.
