You do not have to paint a new Wern-Wood fence panel. Our timber panels are pressure treated for outdoor use, so paint or another exterior finish is an optional extra layer of protection and a way to change the appearance.

Wait for about a week of dry weather before painting a new panel
For the best chance of good adhesion, we recommend giving a new pressure-treated fence panel around a week of dry weather before painting it.
The panel is already pressure treated, so there is no need to rush to coat it for protection. Letting the timber dry first gives the finish a better surface to bond to.
Choose the finish by the look you want
We are happy with the exterior fence and garden finishes we stock. The colour and type of finish are mainly personal preference because the underlying panel already has pressure treatment.

Remove loose finish before repainting an old fence panel
For an older panel, remove any loose paint or previous finish first. Repair any damage, then repaint the panel as normal.
Pay attention to the condition of the fence as well as the colour. Moisture and movement are the main things that shorten panel life, so keep the bottom edge away from wet soil and grass with a gravel board and make sure the posts and fixings remain solid.
Pressure-treated panels can last around 8–10 years with care
As a realistic guide, we would expect a pressure-treated timber fence panel to last around 8–10 years if it is looked after. A finish can add protection, but keeping moisture away from the panel and preventing excess movement are just as important.
