For standard 6ft fence panels, set the posts to suit the actual panel width. For featheredge fencing, we normally work at 6ft post centres. Do not assume every panel sold as “6ft” is exactly the same width — check the panel before setting out the posts.
Fence panel post spacing follows the actual panel width
For framed fence panels, the spacing is controlled by the panel you are fitting. A panel described as 6ft wide may be 1800mm, 1830mm or another stated size, so check the actual product dimensions before digging the holes.
Set out the complete run before fixing the posts permanently. If you are fitting panels between timber posts, see How to Install Fence Panels Between Timber Posts.
Featheredge fencing normally uses 6ft post centres
For our standard timber featheredge fencing layout, use 6ft post centres as the default. This gives a straightforward layout for the posts, rails and boards used through the run.
If the fence design, ground conditions or exposure requires a different layout, plan the whole system around that spacing rather than changing one component in isolation.
Measure from the same point on every post
Post centres means measuring from the centre of one post to the centre of the next. Keep the setting-out method consistent along the run so the bays remain even.
Once you know the spacing, calculate the number of posts
Use our Fence Post Calculator to enter the total run length and your chosen bay width or post spacing. It will calculate the number of bays and posts required.
Then shop Timber Fence Posts or compare the complete Fence Posts range.
