Fence battens, screening battens and timber slats

This collection is for rounded-edge treated timber used as fence battens, screening battens and timber fence slats. It is intended for landscaping and fencing projects, not as a substitute for graded roofing batten.

Choose the screen layout before the quantity

A one-sided slatted or Venetian screen and a double-sided hit-and-miss fence can use the same landscaping batten but very different quantities. The gap changes the look as well: Wern-Wood normally works around 10–20mm for fencing and 15–30mm for screens, with smaller gaps giving more privacy and larger gaps allowing more light through.

If you are still choosing the layout, read Timber Garden Privacy Screens – Slatted, Venetian or Hit-and-Miss?.

Build guides

For a typical one-sided horizontal screen, see How to Build a Slatted Garden Screen – Venetian Style. For a double-sided privacy fence where the rear battens cover the sightline through the front gaps, see How to Build a Hit-and-Miss Fence.

Support spacing

For these horizontal batten projects, our normal starting layout is main posts at roughly 6ft centres with an intermediate support at around 3ft. For the separate question of how deep the main posts should be, use our fence post depth guide.

Work out the batten quantity

Once you know the screen dimensions, batten profile and chosen gap, use the Landscape Batten Calculator to plan the quantity, then select the required landscaping batten.
