The Garden Privacy Screen Trend Everyone Is Talking About

7 min read🌿 Garden Screening & Landscaping📍 Wern-Wood, Briton Ferry
Quick Answer

Garden privacy screens use evenly spaced timber battens fixed to a frame to create a slatted effect — blocking sightlines while letting light and air through. They look far better than a standard fence panel, hold up better in wind, and can be built at home using treated softwood landscaping batten. The most popular size is 25×50mm (2×1). Use our Landscaping Batten Calculator to find out exactly how many lengths you need.

If you have spent any time on Instagram, Pinterest, or simply walking through newer housing estates in South Wales, you will have noticed it. Clean lines of evenly spaced timber, filtering light through a garden boundary like a set of wooden louvres. Modern. Considered. Nothing like the standard close board fence panel next door.

The timber garden privacy screen is one of the fastest growing garden trends in the UK right now — and for good reason. It gives homeowners something traditional fencing never quite managed: genuine privacy without the sensation of being boxed in.

What is a garden privacy screen?

A garden privacy screen uses timber battens fixed at even intervals to a simple timber frame. The spacing between each batten is what controls the effect. Tighter gaps give more privacy. Wider gaps keep the garden open and airy. Either way, the result is a design feature rather than just a fence.

Unlike a close board or panel fence, a privacy screen looks intentional from both sides. It becomes part of the garden design rather than just a boundary marker.

25mm
to 50mm is the most common gap between battens on a garden privacy screen. Tighter spacing increases privacy; wider spacing keeps the garden feeling open.

Why are homeowners choosing it over traditional fencing?

Close board fencing has always done the practical job. But it has always looked like a fence — functional, not particularly attractive, and the same as every other garden on the street.

The privacy screen trend is popular because it looks like a deliberate choice. Homeowners who have spent time and money on their garden do not want a standard panel fence undermining the rest of the space. A timber screen frames a seating area, divides the garden into zones, or provides a clean backdrop for planting.

  • Looks good from both sides
  • Lets light through
  • Allows airflow — more wind resistant than solid panels
  • Works as a design feature
  • Can be painted, stained or left natural
  • DIY-friendly build

There is also a structural advantage. Traditional fence panels catch wind like a sail. A slatted screen lets wind pass through the gaps, distributing the load more evenly and putting far less pressure on the posts and fixings.

Where privacy screens work best

Application Why it works Popular batten orientation
Garden boundary Screens neighbours while looking better than a panel fence. Vertical or horizontal
Seating area screen Creates a defined outdoor room without enclosing it fully. Horizontal (Venetian style)
Hot tub or pool screen Provides privacy without blocking airflow. Vertical or angled
Side return or alleyway Screens without creating a solid dark corridor. Vertical
Pergola infill Turns an open pergola into a proper outdoor room. Horizontal
Garden divider Separates lawn from seating or vegetable garden without blocking light. Either

What timber should you use?

The most popular choice for garden privacy screens is rounded edge landscaping batten. The rounded profile gives a clean, finished look from both sides — unlike featheredge which only looks right from one direction.

Size Best for Available lengths
25×50mm (2×1) Most privacy screens — clean, modern, lightweight 3.6m, 4.2m, 4.8m
22×75mm (3×1) Wider batten for a chunkier, more substantial look 3.6m
22×100mm (4×1) Bold, wide profile — fewer battens needed per screen 3.9m

Vertical or horizontal battens?

Vertical battens are the more traditional orientation. Water runs straight off the face and drains away easily.

Horizontal battens give the Venetian screen look popular in contemporary gardens. Water can sit on the top face of horizontal battens, so a slightly angled installation helps drainage.

Yard advice

If you want the horizontal Venetian look, angle each batten very slightly downward toward the front face so rainwater sheds away rather than sitting on top.

How much landscaping batten do you need?

This is where most customers get stuck. The quantity depends on the total length and height of your screen and the gap you want between each batten.

We have built a calculator specifically for this. Input your screen dimensions and chosen batten spacing and it tells you exactly how many lengths to order.

Finishing and maintenance

Pressure treated landscaping batten can be left to weather naturally to a silver-grey tone, or painted or stained to any colour. Dark grey and black are particularly popular for contemporary gardens.

One important note on cut ends

When you cut treated timber to length, the freshly exposed end grain should be treated with an end grain preservative before installation.

Common garden privacy screen mistakes

  • Not accounting for batten width in the quantity calculation — this is why the calculator exists.
  • Using featheredge instead of rounded edge batten — featheredge looks unfinished from the back.
  • Not angling horizontal battens — water sits on top and accelerates weathering.
  • Forgetting post depth — at minimum one third of the post length should be in the ground.
  • Using internal screws outside — always use exterior-rated fixings.
