OSB Board Questions Answered

OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board. The strands are laid in layers and pressed so the sheet behaves as a structural panel rather than loose chip material.

It is usually chosen where structural performance matters more than appearance.

The word oriented matters because the strands are not random. Their layout is part of what gives OSB its predictable structural performance.

That is why OSB is used in real building work rather than treated like a basic packing board.

For most building jobs, OSB 3 is the grade people actually want. It handles humid conditions better than lower grades.

It is still not the same thing as waterproof.

Moisture resistant does not mean happy sitting in the weather uncovered. That is where many people get caught out.

Short-term site exposure is one thing. Permanent wet exposure is another.

Water resistant means the board copes better with damp conditions than a dry-use only sheet.

It does not mean the board should be treated as an exposed weatherproof surface.

A bit of weather during construction is common enough. The issue is when boards stay wet, especially around cut edges.

Once badly swollen, OSB does not really go back to how it started.
