Quick answer: pre-drill MDF before driving screws, especially near cut edges. Use a pilot hole that lets the screw threads bite without forcing the fibres apart, and stop driving once the fixing is secure rather than overtightening it.
Pre-drill before screwing into MDF
MDF does not behave like solid timber at a cut edge. A pilot hole reduces the force needed to drive the screw and lowers the chance of the edge swelling or splitting.
Be especially careful near edges and ends
The closer the fixing is to a cut edge, the less material there is around it. Keep the fixing sensibly positioned, drill straight and avoid forcing an oversized screw into the edge without a pilot hole.
Countersink if the screw head needs to finish flush
If the head needs to sit below the surface for filling and painting, use a countersink rather than relying on the screw head to crush its way into the MDF face.
Do not overtighten the screw
Once the screw is secure, stop. Driving it harder can strip the fibres around the thread and leave a weaker fixing rather than a stronger one.
Glue can strengthen cabinet joints
For suitable cabinet and furniture joints, adhesive plus mechanical fixing can give a better assembly than asking the screws to do all the work alone.
