Quick answer: for a local repair to compatible Techno EPDM membrane, use the EPDM repair system rather than a general roof coating: prepare the membrane, apply Techno EPDM Primer, allow it to become touch dry, then patch the damaged area with Techno 9in Flashing Tape.
This is the repair method recommended in the current Techno TRC guidance from Avenir Roofing. If the membrane is extensively damaged or the roof deck beneath it has failed, deal with the underlying roof problem rather than treating a patch as a substitute for the repair.
Use EPDM flashing tape for local membrane repairs
Techno's 9in flashing tape is the flexible detailing product in the system. It is intended for irregular shapes, roof details and compatible EPDM repair patches.
The repair area needs to be clean, sound and dry enough for the pressure-sensitive system to bond properly. Remove dirt and contamination from the area and make sure the patch will be bonding to sound membrane rather than loose material.
Prime the EPDM before applying the patch
Do not skip the primer. Techno requires primer with its pressure-sensitive tapes.
- Prepare the area around the damage.
- Apply Techno EPDM Primer over the area that will receive the patch.
- Allow the primer to become touch dry.
- Apply the flashing tape over the prepared area.
- Press the patch down firmly across the full bonded area.
Repair a failed seam with the correct EPDM tape system
If the problem is an EPDM-to-EPDM seam rather than a puncture, use the compatible seam/detail system rather than simply painting over the joint. 3in Seam Tape is the double-sided product for forming compatible membrane overlap joints; 6in Cover Tape is used over suitable cover and transition details. Both require Techno Primer.
Check why the roof leaked before closing the repair
A visible hole or failed seam may be the leak point, but water can also enter at trims, upstands, corners, outlets or other roof details and travel before it appears inside. Inspect the surrounding membrane and detailing before deciding that one patch has solved the whole problem.
Do not coat the whole EPDM roof just because one area needs repairing
Techno states that its EPDM membrane does not need a protective topcoat and specifically points to the flashing-tape system for repairs. A local defect is normally better treated with the compatible EPDM repair products than by covering the entire membrane with an unrelated roof coating.
