EPDM roofing is a single-ply synthetic rubber membrane used to waterproof flat and low-pitched roofs. EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. On a typical timber flat roof, the membrane is bonded to the roof deck and finished with compatible adhesives, trims and detailing tapes.

EPDM is the rubber sheet that forms the waterproof roof covering
The membrane itself is the waterproof layer. The Techno TRC system we stock uses a flexible black EPDM sheet that can be supplied in large cut-to-size pieces, allowing many domestic roofs to be covered with one main sheet rather than multiple small sections.
Our Techno TRC 045 membrane is 1.2mm thick and available in widths up to 6.10m and lengths up to 30.5m.
EPDM is normally bonded rather than torched on
For the Techno system, water-based adhesive is used across suitable absorbent timber roof decks such as plywood and OSB, while contact adhesive is used around upstands, masonry and perimeter details. Pressure-sensitive tapes and primer handle seams, flashing details and compatible repairs.

Techno states a life expectancy of more than 50 years
Avenir Roofing, the UK distributor for Techno TRC, states that the membrane has a life expectancy of more than 50 years and provides a 20-year membrane warranty. The roof still needs to be installed correctly and the manufacturer recommends a yearly inspection.
EPDM does not need a protective topcoat
Techno states that its EPDM membrane is resistant to UV and ozone and does not require a protective topcoat. The membrane can be accessed for periodic maintenance, and compatible flashing tape can be used for local repairs if it is damaged.
What can damage EPDM?
The Techno guidance says contact with mineral and vegetable oils, petroleum-based products, fresh bitumen and grease should be avoided. Installation also depends on a suitable roof deck and compatible system products, so EPDM should not be treated as a rubber sheet that can simply be laid over any surface without preparation.
Where is EPDM rubber roofing used?
EPDM is commonly used on flat and low-pitched roofs including garages, extensions, garden rooms, sheds, dormers and other timber flat-roof projects. The large sheet sizes are particularly useful where the roof can be covered with one continuous membrane.
