Description

Quick answer: An auto gate catch is a surface-mounted catch that engages when the gate reaches the closed position. It helps hold a suitable gate shut during everyday use, but it does not pull the gate closed and it is not a security lock.

What is it used for?

Fit the catch and keeper to a timber gate and post or frame so the moving part meets the keeper as the gate closes. It is useful where you want a simple push-to-catch action rather than turning a ring or lifting a Suffolk latch.

  • Available in small and large options on selected finishes.
  • Suitable for garden gates, shed doors and similar light-duty closures.
  • Engages automatically only when the gate is correctly aligned and physically pushed or swung shut.
  • Does not include an operating handle for pulling the gate open.

What else do I need?

Add a pull handle where the gate needs a convenient grip. A Brenton bolt or tower bolt can provide extra restraint when required. Use suitable exterior fixings into solid gate framing and a sound post.

Alternatives

The automatic gate latch is another simple self-catching option in black or galvanised finishes. Choose a ring gate latch or Suffolk latch where you want an integrated handle and deliberate operation from the other side of the gate.

Before ordering: Check the catch size, gate thickness, closing direction and available mounting area. The gate must be hung squarely enough for the catch to meet the keeper; a sagging gate will not be corrected by fitting a larger catch. Do not rely on this fitting where padlocked security is required.
