Description

Quick answer: A Suffolk latch is a traditional thumb-operated latch for timber garden gates and ledged doors. Pressing the thumb piece lifts the latch bar on the opposite side so the gate can be opened from outside.

What is it used for?

Choose it for a classic timber-gate appearance and convenient operation from both sides. The latch bar remains visible on the inside, while the thumb plate provides the operating point on the outside.

  • Choose black or galvanised finish.
  • Suitable for many domestic timber gates and ledged doors.
  • Includes the operating handle as part of the latch system.
  • Simple mechanical action with no automatic closing function.

What else do I need?

Fit with suitable exterior screws into solid timber and align the latch bar with the closing post. Add a Brenton bolt or tower bolt where extra restraint is useful. Use medium tee hinges for many ordinary gates or hook and band hinges for wider, heavier gates.

Alternatives

The long-thumb Suffolk latch provides more reach through thicker gate constructions. A ring latch turns rather than lifts with a thumb. An automatic latch catches when the gate is shut but needs a separate pull handle.

Before ordering: Check gate thickness, thumb-bar reach, latch-bar position and the space required on both faces of the gate. Suffolk latches provide everyday closure, not padlocked security. Black exterior hardware may need periodic coating maintenance.
