Quick answer: A tower bolt is a compact surface-mounted slide bolt for holding gates, shed doors, cupboards and access panels closed. It is simple and economical, but it is not automatically a security lock.
What is it used for?
Slide the straight bolt into its keeper to restrain the moving leaf. Tower bolts work best where the gate or door and receiver are on the same plane and remain accurately aligned.

Alternatives
A Brenton bolt is generally the better choice for a more substantial gate or shed-door bolt and may support padlocking in a compatible arrangement. A spring-loaded bolt helps retain the bolt position under movement. A necked barrel bolt suits offset fixing faces.
Before ordering: Check the bolt throw, body length, keeper position and whether the two fixing surfaces align. Choose galvanised rather than black where prolonged outdoor exposure is the main concern. Do not rely on a small tower bolt as the only security measure for valuable contents.
