Description

Quick answer: This automatic gate latch catches and holds a suitable gate when it is pushed into the closed position. It is a convenient everyday latch, but it does not close the gate by itself and it does not include a pull handle.

What is it used for?

Use it on timber garden gates, side gates, shed doors or similar closures where a simple self-engaging catch is preferred. Correct alignment allows the latch to engage as the gate meets the post or frame.

  • Choose black or galvanised finish.
  • Surface-mounted for straightforward installation.
  • Useful where the gate should catch without turning a ring handle.
  • Not a padlock or high-security locking device.

What else do I need?

Because the latch does not provide a grip, pair it with a pull handle. Add a Brenton bolt for extra restraint or a hasp and staple with a separately purchased padlock where locking is required. Use exterior fixings into solid framing.

Alternatives

The auto gate catch provides another automatic catching format with different listed sizes. A ring latch or Suffolk latch includes an operating handle and is often better where the gate must be opened conveniently from both sides.

Before ordering: Check the gate closes against a suitable post, the fixing faces are level and the latch can be positioned into structural timber. An automatic latch only engages once the gate reaches it; wind, gravity or a gate closer would be needed to move the gate shut. It should not be described or relied upon as childproof.
