A gravel board is the board fitted along the bottom of a fence, between the fence and the ground. It keeps the bottom of the fence panel or featheredge boards away from direct contact with soil and ground moisture.
Gravel boards are normally made from treated timber or concrete. Timber gravel boards suit timber fencing and can also be used with concrete posts. Concrete gravel boards are designed to fit between compatible concrete fence posts.
You may also hear a timber gravel board called a fence base board or kickboard. The job is the same: it forms the bottom section of the fence below the main fencing.
