Quick answer: PIR stands for polyisocyanurate. PIR insulation is a rigid thermal insulation material commonly supplied as boards for suitable roof, wall and floor build-ups.

If you are buying PIR rather than just researching it, browse our PIR insulation range or go straight to our rigid PIR insulation board.

PIR stands for polyisocyanurate

PIR means polyisocyanurate. It is the rigid foam core used in PIR insulation products. In building work, PIR is most commonly encountered as rigid insulation board.

PIR insulation is a rigid thermal insulation board

Rigid PIR board is used to reduce heat loss as part of a complete insulated construction. Its firm sheet format makes it suitable for specified roof, wall and floor systems where rigid insulation is required.

Our standalone PIR boards are full-size 2400 × 1200mm sheets, covering 2.88m² per board. We stock 25mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm and 150mm thicknesses.

PIR boards are used in roofs, walls and floors

PIR insulation is commonly used within suitable pitched roofs, flat roofs, wall constructions and floor build-ups, as well as extensions and renovation work.

The exact position of the insulation matters. For example, a warm flat roof and a cold flat roof place the insulation differently and have different ventilation requirements. If you are planning a flat roof, read our warm roof vs cold roof guide before choosing the build-up.

Choose PIR thickness from the complete construction

There is no single PIR thickness that is correct for every project. The required thickness depends on the complete roof, wall or floor build-up, the available depth and the thermal performance the project needs to achieve.

Choose from the project specification or relevant building requirements rather than assuming that one board thickness suits every job. For the difference between board thickness, thermal conductivity and finished U-value, read our PIR insulation U-value and thickness guide.

PIR board and PIR insulated plasterboard are different products

Standalone PIR board is insulation only. PIR insulated plasterboard combines PIR insulation with a plasterboard face for internal thermal dry lining.

If the project needs a rigid insulation sheet within the construction, start with PIR board. If it needs insulation and a plasterboard lining combined, insulated plasterboard may be the more appropriate product.

Shop PIR insulation
