Quick answer: Yes — you can replace damaged timber decking boards without rebuilding the whole deck if the joists, bearers and supports underneath are still sound. Remove enough of the old surface to inspect the frame before covering it with new boards.

Check the frame before buying replacement decking boards

Rotten or split deck boards do not automatically mean the whole frame needs replacing. Once the damaged boards are lifted, check the timber underneath for softness, rot, movement or failed connections.

If the supporting frame is still solid, individual boards or a larger section of decking can be replaced. If the joists or supports are damaged, repair those first rather than hiding the problem under new boards.

Match the finished board size and profile

Replacement boards need to suit the existing deck. Measure the finished width and thickness of the old board rather than relying only on its nominal size, and compare the visible profile before ordering.

Our treated timber decking boards are sold as 125 × 32mm nominal and finish at approximately 120 × 28mm, with several lengths available. They are suitable for replacement decking where those finished dimensions and the profile suit the existing layout.

Keep every replacement board properly supported

Do not use a new board to bridge a damaged or missing section of frame. The replacement decking should sit on sound supporting timber and follow the same layout as the surrounding deck.

Keep the board gaps consistent with the existing deck. For a new or substantially relaid section, see our decking board spacing guide; we normally work to a consistent 5–8mm gap for timber decking.

Use exterior decking screws and re-treat cut ends

Fix replacement boards with suitable exterior-grade decking screws. Where pressure-treated timber is freshly cut, re-treat the cut ends where possible before completing the repair.

If the frame is damaged, repair that first

If removing the boards exposes rotten or weakened joists, the job has moved beyond a simple surface repair. Replace or properly repair the affected structural timber before fitting new decking. Our treated structural timber includes the sections commonly used for decking subframes.
