Joist hangers are commonly used where decking joists finish against an outer frame or other supporting timber. Choose the hanger by the actual joist width and the connection design rather than simply buying a generic 4x2 hanger.

47mm treated structural timber needs a 47mm hanger where an exact-width hanger is specified

Wern-Wood's structural timber range uses 47mm-thick sections, so the 47mm mini joist hanger is the matching compact hanger width for suitable decking connections. Do not automatically replace it with a 50mm hanger.

Mini joist hangers are commonly used in decking

Mini/no-leg timber-to-timber hangers are commonly used for deck framing because they provide a compact connection between internal joists and the outer frame. The current 47mm mini hanger is for timber up to 100mm deep, so deeper joists or different load details can require another hanger type.

A joist hanger is not required at every timber joint

Deck frames can use different structural connection details. If the design uses a hanger, install the specified hanger and fixings. If it uses another engineered timber connection, do not add or substitute hardware simply because it looks similar.

Use connector nails, not ordinary decking screws

For the current mini hanger range, use the specified 30 × 3.75mm square twist nails. Read Joist Hanger Nails or Screws? before changing the fixing type.

Joist spacing is a separate decision

The hanger supports the end connection; it does not determine how far apart the decking joists should be. Use the Decking Joist Calculator for the framing layout.
