Description
DuraPost URBAN is a premium slatted composite fencing system designed for contemporary gardens where the warmth of a timber-style finish is wanted without building the fence from individual timber battens. The wide composite boards create a strong linear design and can be installed horizontally or vertically.
Who is URBAN for?
URBAN suits homeowners investing in a modern garden, garden designers looking for a bold slatted boundary, and installers who want a coordinated composite system rather than constructing a batten fence piece by piece.
What are these boards?
Each URBAN board is approximately 1830mm long × 306mm high × 45mm deep. The standard Birkdale pack contains two boards. A complete approximately 1.83m × 1.83m bay uses 6 boards in total — 3 packs of 2.
The boards connect together as a modular slatted panel and are contained by a dedicated top and bottom rail set.
What do I need for one complete URBAN bay?
- 3 packs of URBAN boards — 6 boards total
- 1 × URBAN rail set — top and bottom rails
- DuraPost posts for the complete fence run
- 6 × M4 × 30mm square-drive screws for the standard panel arrangement shown by Birkdale
Adjoining bays share posts, so calculate the whole fence rather than ordering two posts for every bay.
Horizontal or vertical?
Both are supported. Horizontal installation creates the strongest visual width and works particularly well in contemporary gardens. Vertical installation gives the same material a very different architectural character.
Birkdale notes that the horizontal arrangement changes the effective finished dimensions slightly, so use a full URBAN board to gauge the post spacing rather than relying only on nominal dimensions.
How does the horizontal system go together?
- Set the posts using the bottom rail as the spacing gauge.
- Fit the bottom rail.
- Place the composite boards into the rail with the tongue-and-groove edges engaged tightly.
- Engage the final boards using the installation sequence shown in the DuraPost guide.
- Fit the top rail over the completed stack.
- Fix through the posts into the rail ends. Additional side fixings can be added where required by the installation detail.
Why choose URBAN?
- Contemporary slatted appearance without constructing the elevation from dozens of separate battens
- Composite boards manufactured from rice husk and recycled HDPE
- Can be installed horizontally or vertically
- Dedicated powder-coated galvanised-steel top and bottom rails
- Compatible with DuraPost and, according to Birkdale, suitable timber or concrete post arrangements
- Low routine maintenance compared with a timber slatted fence
How strong is the system?
Birkdale's URBAN technical sheet records durability testing to EN 1794-1:2018 using an 1800 × 1800mm bay with 2.4m DuraPosts set 600mm into the ground. The stated test included wind speeds up to 110mph and a 625kg static load. This test relates to the specified complete test assembly rather than an individual board.
Storage before installation
Store composite boards flat, dry and off the ground with even support underneath. This helps prevent the long boards taking a bend before they are installed.
