Description

These treated stop chamfer decking spindles are made for traditional timber decking balustrades. Each spindle is 41mm wide and 895mm long, with a stopped chamfer detail that gives the centre section a shaped finish while leaving square ends for fitting into a grooved handrail and baserail.

They are pressure treated for external use and are designed to pair with our Treated Decking Handrail / Baserail & Infill – 42 x 65mm x 3.6m.

How many decking spindles do I need?

Measure the clear distance between two fixed decking posts. Enter that measurement below, along with the number of equal-sized bays. The calculator uses the 41mm spindle width and keeps the calculated gap below 100mm.

Spindles per bay
Total spindles required
Finished equal gap

The result assumes equal gaps between the posts and every spindle. If your post spacing varies, calculate each bay separately and add the quantities together.

The 100mm sphere rule
Approved Document K guidance says guarding in locations likely to be used by children under five should be arranged so that a 100mm-diameter sphere cannot pass through any opening. This is often informally called the “baby’s-head rule”. The calculator works to 99mm to provide a small allowance for site measurement and timber variation.

Product details

  • Width: 41mm
  • Length: 895mm
  • Profile: Stop chamfer
  • Material: Pressure treated pine
  • Use: Vertical infill for timber decking balustrades
  • Compatible rail: 42 x 65mm grooved handrail and baserail

How to space decking spindles

  1. Install the decking posts and measure the clear opening between them.
  2. Use the calculator to find the minimum number of spindles for that bay.
  3. Subtract the combined spindle width from the opening.
  4. Divide the remaining space by one more than the number of spindles to create equal end gaps.
  5. Cut the handrail infill into spacers matching the calculated gap.

For example, an 1800mm clear bay requires 13 of these 41mm spindles. Spacing them evenly creates an approximate gap of 90.5mm between the posts and spindles.

Installation and safety notes

This calculator only estimates spindle quantity. It does not confirm that the completed balustrade meets every requirement for guarding height, strength, post spacing, fixings, climbability or the supporting deck structure. Requirements can vary with the location and height of the deck.

Measure the actual timber before cutting spacers because treated timber can vary slightly as its moisture content changes. Use suitable external fixings, treat freshly cut ends with an appropriate end-grain preservative and maintain the finished balustrade with a suitable exterior coating.
