Description
Build a strong, square timber gate without relying on a traditional all-timber frame. The GateMate Adjustable Steel Gate Frame Kit gives you a rigid steel skeleton that adjusts to suit the opening, then allows you to clad the finished frame in timber to create the style of gate you want.
It is particularly useful for bespoke side gates, garden gates and build-on-site gates where you want the appearance of timber but the strength and dimensional stability of a steel frame behind it.
What makes this gate frame different?
The frame is telescopic in both directions. Set the width and height to suit your required gate size, secure the steel sections, then fix your chosen timber facing to the frame. Instead of constructing the structural gate frame entirely from timber, the GateMate steel frame provides the main rigid structure.
This makes it an excellent option where you want to build a made-to-measure timber gate while reducing the risk of the frame moving out of square as the timber changes with the weather.
Adjustable size range
- Width: 700mm to 1200mm
- Height: 1250mm to 1950mm
The vertical and horizontal sections telescope, so one kit can be configured across a wide range of common pedestrian and garden gate sizes.
Steel construction
The outer telescopic sections are manufactured from 35mm x 35mm square hollow steel section, with 30mm x 30mm inner telescopic sections. The corner and centre T-joints are fully welded before finishing.
The steel receives a Dacromet® zinc coating followed by a black RAL 9005 powder-coated finish. Birkdale states the finished frame has been in-house salt-spray tested to 500 hours.
What is included?
- 4 x steel corner joints
- 2 x steel centre T-joints

- 10 x grub screws
- 8 x hex-head self-drilling screws
What timber do I need?
The kit creates the structural steel gate frame; you then add timber to create the finished gate. This gives you considerable freedom over the final appearance. The exact timber quantity and layout will depend on the finished gate dimensions and the style of cladding you choose.
Measure the opening first, allow the clearances required for your installation and hardware, then set the steel frame to the appropriate finished gate dimensions before cutting and fixing the timber.
Who is it for?
This is a strong choice for DIY customers, landscapers, fencing contractors and joiners who need a bespoke timber gate but want a purpose-designed adjustable steel frame behind it. It removes much of the guesswork from creating the structural frame and gives you a repeatable base for building gates on site.
