Description

CLS timber is smooth, planed softwood with eased edges, commonly used as studwork timber and stud wall timber for internal partitions, framing and general interior building work. Its consistent finished dimensions make it straightforward to work with when building walls, boxing in services or fixing boards over a timber frame.

Choose from 3x2, 4x2 and 6x2 CLS in the finished sizes and lengths listed below.

CLS timber sizes

  • 38 × 63mm (3x2): 2.4m, 3.0m and 4.8m
  • 38 × 89mm (4x2): 2.4m, 3.0m and 4.8m
  • 38 × 140mm (6x2): 4.8m

3x2, 4x2 and 6x2 are nominal trade sizes. You may also see them written as 2x3, 2x4 and 2x6. The metric measurements above are the finished sections supplied, so use those when checking what will actually fit your job.

Common uses

  • Internal stud walls and partition walls
  • Timber framing and carcassing
  • Boxing in pipework and services
  • Garage, loft and room-dividing frameworks
  • Framework for plasterboard and sheet materials

Building a stud wall?

CLS is a common choice for internal partition framing because it is easy to handle and gives a consistent frame for fixing boards. The correct timber section and stud spacing depend on the wall design, height and what the frame needs to support.

For the complete job, use our Build a Stud Wall project collection to bring together CLS, plasterboard, door linings and fixings without pretending every wall uses the same fixed kit.

For planning and setting out, read our guide to building an internal stud wall with CLS timber and our 400mm vs 600mm stud spacing guide.

For the rest of the build, browse plasterboard, insulation where the chosen wall system calls for it and drywall screws. If the wall includes an internal doorway, finish the opening with our softwood door lining kit.

CLS, planed timber or treated structural timber?

Choose CLS where you are building an internal frame, stud wall or partition. If the timber will remain visible and appearance is more important than framing efficiency, our planed timber range is usually the better fit. For decking subframes, external framing or applications where treated construction timber is required, browse our treated structural timber.
